A BEST PRACTICES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DOCUMENT

to support the implementation of the Information and Communication Technology Program of Studies from September 2000 to June 2003 and for use in Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) Institutes developed and offered through the Alberta Regional Consortia.

SCOPE AND SEQUENCE DOCUMENT

Kindergarten to Grade 12

Sample Correlation of Information and Communication Technology Program of Studies

and Common Curriculum

Developed by Mary-Lee Judah

under contract to the

Edmonton Regional Consortium

This work arises is based on Teaching and Learning with Technology:

Professional Development for Alberta Teachers, March 1998.

Edmonton Regional Consortium acknowledges the funding support of Alberta Learning that helped to make this project possible.

This document is located at www.tlt.ab.ca the Alberta Regional Consortia website which hosts over 300 Units of Practice developed since 1998 by practicing Alberta teachers in Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) Institutes across Alberta.

The basis of this Scope and Sequence is the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Program of Studies and the Programs of Study for social studies, language arts, science and mathematics. The document offers sample ways to integrate technology in four core curricula. The Scope and Sequence is organized according to the Teaching and Learning with Technology Program Goals as stated in the original regional consortia document, Teaching and Learning with Technology: Professional Development for Alberta Teachers, March 1998.

Rationale

During 1998, over 130 educators from across Alberta worked through the Alberta Regional Consortia to develop a program called Teaching and Learning with Technology: Professional Development for Alberta Teachers. By 2000, the Information and Communication Technology interim Program of Studies document had been reviewed, revised and mandated for implementation between September 2000 and June 2003. In addition, there have been some revisions to common curricula most notably in mathematics and English language arts. It became apparent that the TLT document needed to be updated so that it could continue to support professional development programs for teachers. Specifically, the Scope and Sequence will support the TLT Program which consists of three parts:

  1. Skill-building Program. Participants learn more about specific technology as it links to particular aspects of curriculum. For example, the use of spreadsheets in science, grade seven.
  2. Technology across the Curriculum. In a three-day summer institute, teachers create Units of Practice which are then placed on the website at www.tlt.ab.ca/. The Scope and Sequence will enable easy access to specific outcomes in ICT with suggested correlation to the common curricula.
  3. Technology Mentorship Program. In a five-day program, mentors learn to facilitate and support the professional development of their colleagues in schools and jurisdictions.

Using the Scope and Sequence as a Professional Development Tool

The Scope and Sequence is one of several reference documents. It contains suggestions and possibilities only. Computer hardware, software, bandwidth, network access, scheduling and resources are subject to local school and jurisdiction conditions.

The Scope and Sequence document will:

  1. support the work of teachers and school administrators to continue to learn more effective ways to fuse curriculum and powerful tools of technology in new ways of doing things in the classroom.
  2. enable teachers to more easily link common curriculum outcomes with the ICT outcomes.
  3. support the instructional leadership of school-based administrators to work with staff to implement the ICT outcomes.
  4. support the development of Teacher Professional Growth Plans and mentoring programs.
  5. support work to create teaching plans, materials and assessments which infuse technology within social studies, science, mathematics and language arts.
  6. support professional development programs such as Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) that focus directly on teacher instructional development work with lesson and unit plans as well as student activities and assessment.

The Process

The Scope and Sequence was developed based on the original document, Teaching and Learning with Technology: Professional Development for Alberta Teachers, the Information and Communication Technology Program of Studies and four core curricula programs of study. It has been updated to reflect changes to Alberta Learning Programs of Study.

Two school administrators provided feedback via e-mail. A group of six practicing classroom teachers and a university professor met to review the document and suggest revisions and edits. The intent of the feedback was to ensure the suggested activities, Information and Communication Technology Program of Studies and subject area outcomes were accurately correlated.

The Scope and Sequence document will be provided to each of the Regional Consortia Summer Institute TLT Instructors and will used by participants in the TLT Summer Institute.
